Interactive Brokers has launched Ethereum staking for eligible clients of Interactive Brokers LLC, adding a way to earn ETH rewards through the broker’s Client Portal. The October 13 launch uses staking services provided by zerohash. At launch, Ethereum is the only asset the company says clients can stake; its broader list of 20 supported trading assets does not mean all are available for staking. Interactive Brokers’ announcement says clients can submit stake and unstake requests through a Staking Dashboard and monitor pending activity.
The arrangement puts zerohash and its affiliates between the client’s instruction and Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network. The zerohash user agreement hosted by Interactive Brokers describes the service as sending eligible assets from a hosted wallet to a staking account, then staking them directly or through a third-party validator. Clients must opt in; zerohash says it will not initiate staking or unstaking without their instructions.
How are staking rewards calculated and credited?
The Ethereum network determines whether and how much reward is generated. Under the agreement, zerohash or a third-party validator acts as a transaction validator; when it validates a block, the network may grant a staking reward. Zerohash deducts applicable service, validator and network fees before calculating the client’s share. Interactive Brokers says earned rewards are credited as additional staked cryptocurrency and can compound while the position remains staked.
The announcement gives no reward rate or client fee schedule. The agreement says rates, if displayed, are estimated, variable and not guaranteed; fees and the reward share are disclosed in the platform before a client receives staking services. Rewards can also be zero. Zerohash’s terms say a reward is not owed to the client until zerohash or an affiliate receives it from the network.
What can delay an unstake request?
A dashboard request does not make ETH immediately transferable. The agreement makes unstaking subject to any lock-up or unbonding period imposed by the network, followed by any additional waiting period zerohash applies to return assets to the account. It gives examples of delays for some digital assets, but Interactive Brokers has not published a specific Ethereum unstaking timeline in its launch announcement.
The terms also describe protocol and validator risks. A network may slash staked assets or withhold rewards if a validator violates protocol rules or fails to perform its duties. Zerohash says it will use commercially reasonable efforts to prevent slashing and will replace affected assets in some cases, but lists exceptions including bugs, network failures, hacks and events outside its control. The agreement also warns that service or network downtime can reduce rewards and says staked balances do not receive SIPC or FDIC protection.
Who can use the service at launch?
The launch announcement limits staking to eligible Interactive Brokers LLC clients. Product availability can vary by affiliate and country of residence, while zerohash’s agreement allows eligibility and access to depend on location. The brokerage has not announced a wider staking rollout or additional staking assets. For now, the expansion adds an ETH staking route inside an existing multi-asset brokerage account, with returns and withdrawal timing dependent on the network and service provider.
